birbgames's News

Posted by birbgames - May 5th, 2022

The wait is almost over. One week from now Birb Café will finally be going live on Steam!

This news also comes with the last major update for the game demo...

... a complete rebalance of the coffee making stats.

Why?

While our testers could figure out which stats are required based on dialogue hints, the actual numbers were nearly impossible to figure out without painful trial-and-error, as they were too confusing and arbitrary from order to order. This was also impossible to balance (believe me, we tried), so we did the next best thing: simplify it!

The bean now adds a "greater" amount of stat, the sweetener a "lesser" amount, and combined they become an "overwhelming" amount of stat.

This is both much more intuitive and provides better feedback to the player as to what they did wrong (or right!)

Check out the updated demo right here on Newgrounds!

Full version will be available on Steam and Itch!

Now, for some updates on our silence, and how Birb Café is coming along

So far we have finished implementing 27 days of content, with the game's planned end being around day 35-36.

Including branching paths, our game currently contains a whooping 42.798 words!

Currently we are in the process of writing our finale which is quite elaborate, as you can see. You'll need more than a few playthroughs to experience it all... your choices did matter, after all!

Yes, we know you can't make out what those notes say. No, we're not telling you.

Assuming everything goes according to plan, we should have a release date for you in about a month.

Hopefully, it will have been worth the wait.

If you haven't tried the Birb Café demo yet, it's right here on Newgrounds and Steam!

With the occasion of Steam Next Fest, we have released a much requested update for Birb Café!

The changes include:

  • overhaul of guestbook and recipe book during coffee making, it's much cleaner and easier to use
  • overhaul of tutorial: more interactive and much easier to understand now
  • add option to disable tutorial
  • addition of "Outcome List" button during coffee making: the list persists across playthroughs, which makes it easier to explore all the outcome combinations across multiple playthroughs
  • prompt when buying Ibrik Coffee reminding you that you can only make it using Ibrik Brew, obviously
  • many other fixes and improvements
  • Chelly is a little bit cuter now

Check it our right here on Newgrounds, and let me know what you think!

I'm very excited to make this demo public!

In the meantime, I'll be posting behind-the-scenes content on my Patreon (the first post was already made), so please consider pledging to see it and fund the game's development.

Every little bit counts, and you'll get both my and Chelly's eternal gratitude!

Hello, I'm birbgames! And I'm working on a game, obviously.

What kind of game?

It's a game about a cute barista bird serving stat-boosting coffee to adventurers who need a little help on their quest!

This bird, Chelly the qtBird!

A demo is currently in the works (using Godot 3.2), very quickly nearing completion, and as it turns out Godot can export it to HTML5 and allow me to upload it on Newgrounds as well.

In the meantime, I'll be posting some game art, and providing updates.

I also made a very handy Newgrounds playlist with all the game-related art commissions gathered in one place, check it out here! If possible, I try adding the art posted by the creators themselves. I'm only personally posting the art made by people who don't have a Newgrounds account, and give me permission to post it in their stead.

Be sure to follow for future updates, and check out my other websites as well!
